Program Description

The College Scholarship Program is available on a competitive basis to community college, four-year college, and graduate students of Hispanic heritage. Award amounts generally range from $1,000 to $3,000.

 

 

Eligibility Requirements

o Be of Hispanic heritage

o Be a U.S. Citizen or a legal permanent resident with permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551 (not expired)

o Be an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking program at an accredited U.S. college or university in the U.S., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, or Guam

o Have earned at least 12 undergraduate units in a U.S. accredited college or university

o Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale (or 4.00 on a 5.00 scale)

o Have applied for Federal Financial Aid

American Psychological Association (APA)-Minority Fellowship Program

The APA Minority Fellowship Program’s objective is to increase the awareness of issues related to ethnic minority mental health and to improve the quality of mental health treatment delivered to ethnic minority populations. The program provides financial support and professional guidance to individuals pursuing doctoral degrees in psychology. The program has five programs to support the training of researchers and practitioners.

Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund

Since 1961, the Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund has provided need-based grants to college students active in building the movement for social and economic justice. More recently, grantees have been active in the struggle against racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression; building the movement for economic justice; and creating peace through international, anti-imperialist solidarity. The maximum grant is for $6,000 and generally 25-30 scholarships are awarded each year. Although grants are for one year although, students may re-apply for subsequent years. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply.

Ford Foundation Fellowships for Minorities

The Ford Foundation offers pre-doctoral, dissertation, and post-doctoral fellowships in the form of monetary awards. To be eligible, candidates must be Mexican-American, Native American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Pacific Islander, African-American, or Puerto Rican. Fellowships are awarded in a nationwide competition to individuals who demonstrate superior scholarship and show the greatest promise for future achievement as scholars, researchers, and teachers in institutions of higher education.

Gates Millennium Scholars

The Gates Millennium Scholars initiative, funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is aimed at expanding access and opportunity to higher education to those citizens who help reflect the diverse society in which we live. The Foundation seeks to increase the number of Latinos, African-Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Asian Americans enrolling in and completing undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The Gates Millennium Scholars awards will enable young Americans to attend the undergraduate or graduate institutions of their choice and be prepared to assume important roles as leaders in their professions and communities. Gates Millennium Scholars must be nominated.

Latino Initiatives for the Next Century (LINC)/TELACU Education Foundation

The LINC/TELACU scholarships are awarded to Latino students who are first generation college students with an unmet financial need. Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, and community service. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the U.S and have at least a 2.5 GPA.

League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC)-National Scholarship Fund

As part of LULAC’s education efforts, the National Scholarship Fund (LNSF) was established in 1975 to provide scholarships to Hispanic students. Under the LNSF program, local LULAC councils, in partnership with local and national businesses, award scholarships to students in their communities. LNSF is administered by the LULAC National Educational Service Centers, Inc. (LNESC), a non-profit educational organization established by LULAC to provide educational programs for Hispanics and other youth. National Scholastic Achievement Awards, of at least $1,000, are awarded to entering or continuing college students with a minimum 3.5 GPA. Honors Awards, ranging from $250 to $1,000, are awarded to entering or continuing graduate students with at least a 3.25 GPA. General Awards, ranging from $250 to $1,000, are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students attending school full- or part-time. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal residents.
